With its distinctive, heritage-inspired looks—from the round headlights to (on most models) the white roof—and its serious off-road credentials, the Toyota FJ Cruiser has been turning heads as well as impressing buyers since it was launched in 2006.
A former concept vehicle that pays homage to Toyota’s legendary Land Cruiser FJ40 made between 1960 and 1984, the FJ Cruiser evolved into Toyota’s third midsize SUV. It was soon earning acclaim from sources as diverse as Popular Mechanics (2007 “Automotive Excellence Award–Design”) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (2009 “Top Safety Pick”).
For 2011, the FJ Cruiser offers a new take on the available adventure-oriented Trail Teams Special Edition Package.
It’s distinguished by an Army Green exterior (accented by black bumpers, front grille and door handles) that’s complemented inside by a special green fabric for the seat inserts and trim, and an Off-Road Package that’s standard for all models except the base.
The styling is backed up by Trail Teams capability. Under the hood, an easy-to-clean cyclone pre-air cleaner (standard on all models) traps sand and dirt. The Off-Road Package beefs up chassis performance with trail-tuned Bilstein shock absorbers; a locking rear differential (standard with the 6-speed manual transmission, optional with the automatic); an active traction control (A-TRAC) system; skid plates; rock rails; and BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires wrapped around Toyota Racing Development alloy wheels.
Other changes bolster the FJ Cruiser’s off-road capabilities while enhancing interior comfort and convenience. There’s improved passenger-side access, with a front seat that can fold farther forward; new folding headrests on the outboard rear seats for better rear visibility; improved rear-seat access; and upgraded heater performance.
A new standard six-speaker audio system has an AM/FM/CD player with MP3/WMA playback; XM® satellite radio (includes a 90-day trial subscription); USB port with iPod connectivity; hands-free phone capability; and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology. The steering wheel now integrates audio system and Bluetooth controls for ease of use. Other standard features include water-resistant seats and a full-size spare tire.
Available upgrades include a 10-speaker JBL premium audio system; a “floating ball” type multi-information display (with compass, inclinometer and temperature gauge); remote keyless entry; power side mirrors; a 120-volt AC power outlet; cruise control; leather-wrapped steering wheel; metal-colored shift lever; and rear privacy glass.
